Updated News on License Renewal for DCs Whose Licenses Expire in 2020
Information for Licensees Who Have Already Renewed, Options for Those Who Renewed on October 2nd or Later, or Have Yet to Do So

The MAC Government Relations team has been in contact with representatives from the Michigan Bureau of Professional Licensing seeking clarification of continuing education needed for license renewal in the wake of the Michigan Supreme Court decision of October 2, 2020. That decision invalidated Governor Whitmer’s executive orders issued after April 30, 2020, including orders that waived CE requirements for licensees who renewed their license during a state of emergency associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you renewed your license by 11:59pm on Thursday, October 1, 2020:

  • If audited for continuing education, we believe that the Michigan Bureau of Professional Licensing will take into consideration that you renewed before the Supreme Court decision invalidating Governor Whitmer’s executive orders, but we cannot guarantee it.
  • The MAC is creating a “CE Audit Defense Letter” that licensees who renewed their license prior to the Michigan Supreme Court decision of October 2nd can use in case they are audited.
  • THERE IS SOME RISK ASSOCIATED WITH TAKING THIS APPROACH. While we fully expect the State of Michigan to take into consideration the circumstances associated with your license renewal, we cannot guarantee that you will be successful in defending against an audit. To mitigate your risk in case of a CE audit, you should make sure that you have the continuing education required for license renewal (see below).

If you have not yet renewed your license, or you renewed your license on or after October 2, 2020, you have two options:

  • Get the required CEs [30 hours (15 live), with 1 in ethics, 1 in sexual boundaries, 1 in pain and symptom management, 2 in physical measures (live), and 2 in performance and ordering of tests (live)]. We believe that if audited the State will be looking at your live hours, so be sure that you have at least 15, with two being in physical measures and two in the performance and ordering of tests. The MAC is working on additional opportunities before November 30th for to get additional live hours, if needed (see below).
  • Apply for a CE Waiver for “circumstances beyond the licensee’s control (COVID-19 Pandemic). If you want to apply for a waiver, the MAC is creating a sample letter you can use to do so. Keep in mind: If requesting a waiver, you must do so before your license expires. Also, we expect the Michigan Board of Chiropractic to take conditions related to the pandemic into consideration when assessing the need for a waiver, but we cannot guarantee it.

MAC Virtual Express Convention
The MAC is working on a Virtual Express Convention, to be held over the next two weekends. At least 15 hours of “live” continuing education that allows for synchronous/real-time exchange or interaction with the program instructor will be available. These will count toward your “live” hours. Details will be forthcoming, as we are still in the process of negotiating with speakers.

MAC – Available Online Continuing Education

If you do not need “live” hours, the MAC has online options available.

Fall Convention Bundle
The MAC has 11 webinars from the Fall 2020 Virtual Convention, with a total 30 hours of approved continuing education, available on our website,
