What Healthcare Providers Need to Know About Recent COVID Regulation Changes

As of today, Tuesday, June 22, 2021, the Governor and MDHHS have rescinded many restrictions, including capacity limits and mask wearing requirements for non-healthcare settings. These changes apply to the general public. As a healthcare provider, you are held to different standards.

Today, Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has also filed a new set of rules to align with U.S Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines, including emergency temporary standard (ETS). These state and national entities are responsible for protecting healthcare workers.

As we previously reported to you, if you are already practicing current safety standards, in which ALL employees and non-employees are screened prior to entry, and people with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 are not permitted to enter, you don’t need to follow the OSHA ETS. Please remember it is also your responsibility, under the MIOSHA general duty clause, to provide a safe work environment.

Importantly, MDHHS and MIOSHA have both indicated that CDC guidelines recommend that all healthcare providers use face masks. The MAC suggests that you familiarize yourself with the CDC exposure risk assessment tool to help you determine your office safety standards.

In summary, to comply with OSHA protocols and to be exempt from the ETS, healthcare providers must still screen ALL employees and non-employees before entering their offices. Click here for an OSHA patient and employee screening tool.
